Focal Length Comparison

The process of taking these photos took longer than expected because of trying to line up the model, Kainalu, and taking a good picture. As the photos shift in the gif it shows the different length measurements. The lengths we used were 18 mm, 24 mm, 36 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm and 135 mm. At 18 mm my subject had a more dominant nose where as at 135 mm the head was more dominant, the in between at 35 mm or 50 mm in my opinion flattered the subject more. In the body series I noticed his body was dominant then at 135 mm the background blurred and he was in total focus, my favorite photo. By using this we can see how we should shoot and at what length. Looking at the background it has a morph to it with this the building comes closer to the subject almost like it is wrapping him.

Instagram Inspiration

The photographer I chose is James Hennessy. He gained media interest in the seventh grade where he worked on videos first and later started photography when he was around 18. His first gig was for a wedding and he worked on a video, he worked with one camera and one lens. From that experience, he realized there’s potential for photography as well. That was when he realized he can do what he loves and make a living off of it.

His work is displayed on two Instagram accounts: @hanaleifamilyphoto, and his main account @bulimicbarbarian. On his business account, he shoots portrait photos. For example wedding to pregnancy and children photos. By looking at his photos I notice that his editing skills are amazing and the thought is brought out. Most of his photos are located in Hanalei, but occasionally we see photos in other locations.

On his second page, we see more stylistic beach-based photos and some mini video projects. This account displays his personal life and by this, we see that he travels and does some photoshoots. One interesting place he’s been too was Tokyo, Japan with his surfer friend Bryce Baker. All work posted on his personal and business account is shot and edited by him. With a wide range of skills, he presents very well to others who want to get their photos taken and those who might need a video promo.

Significant Image

James Hennessy : Hanalei Family Photo
This photo shoot took place last year in March. These photos were taken by James Hennessy, @hanaleifamilyphoto he is a great guy. I adore the way he caught my natural reaction I also really liked the greenery he included behind me. He was very friendly and that made me comfortable. Looking back that is a great way to take photos, displaying the natural reaction from the subject. Coming to think of it I have taken photos of people, but I haven’t put the extra thought of how to pose and getting the best photo or the background. This inspired me to take more photos of people. I like having that connection with people and them putting trust into me and my skills means a lot. From this class I hope to produce a great portfolio with many portraits that would be the ultimate goal besides having great scenery. When looking through my gallery this photo stood out to me because it is professional and I adore the way it is edited.
